30$F Fellow - Revealing Field Stories

30$F Fellow is volunteer based unpaid position that uniquely provides an opportunity to the fellow to confront ground realities and convey rural Indian women's stories to the watching world. This would be an insider experience for participants who wants to be a part of on-field action. Participant would get to travel in the interiors of the villages where 30$F lends money, to work with local MFI, to immerse in the local culture and to expose the stories that deserves more attention.

This fellowship program should last for 7-14 days and all travel expenses (within India) will be provided by 30$F. A typical applicant would demonstrate sincere interest in understanding Microfinance, good writing skills, adept in the local language (e.g. Hindi), internet savvy and good analytical skills.

What 30$F is trying to achieve through the fellowship program:

Through this exercise, 30 Dollar Finance, in essence, wants to tell human stories that never makes to the Indian newspaper. We want to portray the hardships, the socio-economic and decades old struggle of rural Indian women to the world. Broadly following are our expectations:

1. Collecting and sharing pictures and videos
2. Collecting and sharing on-field stories
3. Performing a random audit of the Microfinance Institute
4. Brining visibility to the fellows and thus engaging more 30$F volunteers in the process

Our first fellow - Mohit Thatte thinks:

Why do I want to be a 30$F fellow?

I see the 30$F fellowship as a unique opportunity to enrich my life experience. I think that micro-finance and 30$F in particular is an excellent idea that can change the world. Being a 30$F fellow gives me the opportunity to interact directly with beneficiaries of microcredit. It lets me see for myself how this form of lending makes a difference to people's lives. I am born and bred in India but have never stepped out of the comfort zone of urban living. This fellowship will let me go to the heart of rural Maharashtra and see people's lives - their dreams and hopes, their hardships - up close and personal. To conclude, I think this is a great opportunity to earn some perspective and I want to make the most of it.

What do I want to achieve out of this exercise?

A few tangible goals are:

1. To audit the partner MFI and ensure that the lending processes are followed as per the agreement with 30$F
2.To meet with beneficiaries and hear their stories. To write about these meetings and try and capture the essence of how people make their financial decisions.
3.To evaluate whether microcredit has been effective in alleviating poverty, i.e. to find out if income-generating activities and nettincome have increased amongst the beneficiaries.
